Philadelphia has held the last ASCB EMBO Meeting, in which many of the Mechanocontrol members have been actively involved.
From December 2 to 6, the Pennsylvania Conventions Center has held one of the biggest meetings in the field of cell biology.
Under the lema Science is an international endeavor, the 2017 first joint ASCB | EMBO meeting highlights the importance of inclusiveness and of the exchange of information and ideas beyond national boundaries. The Keynothe Speaker of this year’s meeting, Cori Bargman, highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration for neuronal cell biology with his talk “Building Knowledge by Integrating Levels: Genes, Cells and Behavior.”
Mechanobiologists take the floor
On Saturday, Xavier Trepat, IBEC’s PI of Integrative cell and tissue dynamics and Mechanocontrol member co-organized the session “From Motors to Cancer: Integrating Mechanical Forces across Scales” together with Johanna Ivaska, from University of Turku. He also gave a talk, entitled “Mechanics of collective cell invasion, division and folding”.
Monday saw the talk of Roger Oria, Phd Student in Pere Roca-Cusachs‘s Lab, “Molecular force loading explains cell sensing of extracellular ligand density and distribution”. During his talk, Roger summarized his main Thesis results, which have been recently published in Nature.
On Tuesday the 5th, Alberto Elosegui, previously a postdoc in Pere’s lab – now a Postdoctoral Fellow in Harvard University -, gave his talk “Force triggers YAP nuclear entry by mechanically regulating transport across nuclear pores”, on his latest paper published in Cell. Ernest Latorre, PhD Student in Trepat’s group, presented his latest observations through a talk entitled “Forces and dynamics in three-dimensional epithelia of controlled size and shape”.

About the Meeting
Typically held within the first two weeks of December, the ASCB’s annual meeting brings together scientists in the field of cell biology to highlight the latest research, techniques, products, and services, providing a venue for networking and career advice, offering research-tested educational approaches for high school teachers and professors who teach undergraduates, and to spur future discovery and collaboration. The ASCB also presents awards, poster sessions and scientific sessions, among others.
